The Lyle School District's After School Adventure Program (ASAP) recently hosted an evening to remember.
On Jan. 21, staff and volunteers pulled together to put on a feast-and-a-half with community members.
"Since most people I know were feeling a bit "chilly" given the recent snowstorm, we thought a big chili feed might warm things up and bring folks together," explained Dena Kline, ASAP program director. "We waited until the weather had cleared enough so that people could safely attend. The event turned out to be a great excuse to break up a cold, slow month and bring people together. We had over 190 community members in attendance -- the turnout was incredible."
And that's not all that ASAP has been up to these days. ASAP is part of a federal 21st Century Learning Centers Rural Opportunities grant that engages Lyle School District students of all ages in summer programming and after school activities from Monday to Thursday throughout the school year. It also assists the district with the purchase of school supplies, funds educational field trips for the kids, and implements community based workshops.
"We've got all kinds of neat things going on lately," said Kline. "We recently sought the expertise of a local artist to help the kids paint petroglyphs on the school cafeteria walls. And we've got a local musician leading Marimba workshops with students. We have a Club Day each week, where the kids work in small groups on activities that coincide with their interests. And students are going to some neat places over the next couple of months -- the Veterans' Home, the White Salmon Library, and Cooper Spur, to name a few. All in all, the schedule is pretty full."
ASAP will be hosting a scrap-booking workshop for community members on Feb. 18 from 5:30 to 8:30 in the Lyle Middle/High School multi-purpose room ($5 charge) and a nacho dinner (free) at the Lyle Middle/High School in early March.
"Stay tuned for details on the dinner. There might even be some Marimba music along with the nachos," said Kline. "Everyone is welcome. The more the merrier."
