Tyler Jones of White Salmon made a monster splash in the pool for the Hood River Valley Swim Team the weekend of Dec. 14-15, 2002.
The 12-year-old had five Top-10 finishes in six starts and shaved more than 20 seconds off his previous best times in two events during the Mount Hood Swim Team Invitational in Hood River.
His highest finish -- third -- came in the 200-yard individual medley, in which he beat his personal record (PR) by 23.33 seconds.
All told, Jones set two PRs. In his worst finish -- a seventh in the 100 backstroke -- he cut 22.20 seconds off his previous best time.
Erin Jones, Tyler's 11-year-old "kid sister," had the best finish of any White Salmon-area swimmer. She earned that distinction by placing second in the 50-yard breast stroke, .02 seconds off her PR.
In addition, Jones took a third, two fourths, a fifth and a sixth. She set new PRs in the 50 back, 200 freestyle and the 500 free.
Six-year-old Mariah Rawding, Husum, finished five of her six races in PR times. Her best showing came in the 50 breast, in which she bettered her PR by 7.06 seconds.
Rawding's top finish was fourth place in the 50 butterfly.
Scott Bergstrom had good results as well, coming in seventh or higher in five of six events.
The 8-year-old posted two thirds, two fifths and one seventh, with PRs in the 25 free (-2.07) and 50 back (-1.79).
He also swam a leg for HRVST's third-place, 8-and-under 100 freestyle relay team that included a trio of 6-year-olds: Jacob Rawding, Ryan Lockman and Matthew Bergstrom.
Rawding placed in the Top 10 in two of three events. He smashed his PR in the 25 free by a whopping 45.50 seconds -- good for fourth place.
Lockman came away with two 11th-place finishes in three starts, while Matthew Bergstrom finished in the Top 10 twice.
Trout Lake swimmer Jessie Robertson came in third, fourth and fifth in three of her six events, with PR times in the 50 freestyle, 100 free and 100 back. The 9-year-old also improved her time in the 50 fly.
Her older sister, Adi, recorded a new PR in the 100 free and had four Top-10 finishes in six races.
Sarah Brending, 11, of White Salmon, logged three PRs in five dips into the pool. In the 200 IM, she knocked 3.91 seconds off her PR on her way to 17th place. Her highest placement was 13th in the 50 breast.
New team members, Adam (11) Wooster and [redacted by request], and Corrie Brending (6), competed in their first swim meet.
Adam placed 15th in 50 free, while [redacted by request] finished 16th in the 50 back. Brending's best effort -- 22nd -- came in the 25 back.
