John and Suze Nigl were married Aug. 26, 1967, in San Jose, Calif., where they spent their first year of marriage. They moved to Fresno in 1968 so John could attend Fresno State College on the GI Bill. He worked nights at the county library while Suze worked as a legal secretary. John received his degree in business administration in 1972 and a few weeks later they moved to Hood River.
Their daughter, Michelle, was born in 1976 and they enjoyed being involved in her activities and watching her grow as a student and athlete. Michelle is an occupational therapist and is married to Dr. Bill Chang. They have a daughter, Eva Hee Nigl-Chang, who turned 8 on Aug. 25.
John is now a semi-retired electrician and though Suze retired as an administrative assistant with the Hood River County School District in 2002, she is very involved in community activities. This summer, John and Suze traveled back in time to where they spent those first few years: Fresno, Yosemite National Park, Sonora and parts of Northern California. They even took time to tour Alaska with their daughter and family — a wonderful way to celebrate 50 years of marriage.
