WHITE SALMON — Columbia High’s girls cross country team was second and the boys team third at the 2024 District IV 1A championships Oct. 31 — and both Bruin teams qualified for the Nov. 9 WIAA state meet.
Columbia, with four personal records from its second through fifth finishers, was second to Montesano in the rainy girls meet, 49-52. La Center (46) and Seton Catholic (91) finished ahead of the Bruin boys (108) at the meet held at Lewis River Golf Course in Woodland.
The Bruin girls were led by sophomore Lilah Zimmerman and freshman Kathryn O’Connor, who were fourth and fifth. Zimmerman, who also was fourth at district in 2023 and 11th at the state, ran the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 9 seconds. O’Connor lowered her personal best by more than a minute, finishing in 20:16.
Columbia senior Helen Hoskins was eighth in a PR 20:43; teammate Maisy Kollman was 15th (PR 21:46); and Maya Tama was 22nd (PR 22:30). Columbia’s non-scoring runners were Heidi Hoppus (36th, 23:26) and Damarys Alvarez (40th, 23:39).
Montesano was led by the1-2 finish of Haley Schweppe and Samantha Schweppe. Haley also won the 2023 individual title.
The Columbia boys had personal record races from six runners, including senior Noah Slayton, whose burst in the final meters lifted him to sixth place in 16:57. Senior Cole Wooding was 18th in 17:48; and Luther Thomas (PR 18:22), Colby Clark (PR 18:25) and Jack Brooks (18:37) were 30th, 31st and 32nd. Ethan Hayes (PR 19:35) and Milo Hoppus (19:39) were 53rd and 55th for the Bruins.
The Columbia girls will run in the state 1A race at 10 a.m. this weekend at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. The 1A boys race is scheduled to begin at noon. Wooding and Slayton competed at state as freshmen, and Slayton placed 60th at state as a sophomore.
