Columbia High’s strategy of running in packs during its cross country meets paid dividends last Wednesday.
The CHS boys and girls teams both won their respective competitions at Husum Hills Golf Course, thanks to runners finishing their 5,000-meter races in bunches, and despite a warm up-per-70s temperature that wasn’t ideal for running, according to Bruins Coach Jill Cole and a handful of runners The Enterprise spoke to on race day.
“It’s a bit warm,” Cole said after the final race of the day. “Runners usually like it about 10 degrees cooler, just for comfort.”
On the girls side, freshmen Rachel Luther and Hal-ey Blair finished 1-2, and junior Sidra Matthias came in fourth. Juniors Kyzlen Stein and Melissa Fortanel rounded out the CHS scoring unit of five with ninth- and 13th-place finishes, respectively.
Luther completed two circuits of Husum Hills in 22 minutes, 54 seconds. Blair went start to finish in 23:39. Matthias’s time was 23:58.
The CHS girls prevailed in the girls competition with a low of 29 points. Kalama followed with 39. Seton Catho-lic was third with 62.
Kalama sophomore Jared Hulsizer set the pace in the boys race, and nobody seriously challenged him as he tripped the finish-line clock at 17:59.
Sophomore Colin Howe led a strong CHS contingent, which placed five runners in the top eight. Howe ran the race in 18:37 to lead the way for the Bruins.
Sophomore Will Nuckoles (18:53.3), senior Cabot Roe (119:15), sophomore Fletcher Andrews (19:19), and freshman Declan Liddiard (19:47) placed third, fifth, sixth, and eighth, respectively.
All these finishes collectively gave the Bruin boys the victory, as they scored a meet-low 24 points. Kalama ran second with 60. Seton Catholic held off Stevenson for third place, 71 to 72.
