Friends of the White Salmon Library (FOL) approved a motion to purchase an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for the White Salmon Valley Community library during their meeting on Oct. 12.
The library recently received a generous donation, orchestrated by the Bruce and Mary Stevenson Foundation, allowing for the purchase of the AED to become a reality. Currently the Library doesn’t have an onsite AED.
Eric Bosler, a member of FOL and the meeting facilitator, presented the motion to the Friends after discussing the new donation.
“There have been a number of studies that have been done that show that life expectancy after a heart attack [increases with an AED] -- the first line of defense is as we know CPR -- the second line of defense that really ties in with CPR is the availability of a heart defibrillator…” Bosler explained during the meeting.
“It turns out there are a couple of similar tracks going on between a new project with the volunteer firefighters and fire district three,” said Bosler.
Volunteer firefighters and EMTs of Klickitat County Fire District No. 3 have launched a project to increase the number of available of Heart Defibrillators (AED) for emergency responders in high traffic locations. The project is called Help Save a Heart.
“It kind of ties in with something that’s been going on in Fort Vancouver and the Help Save a Heart project that the firefighters have undertaken. It is a project to put (AEDs) in a significant large number of places around the community,” explained Bosler.
The goal of the project is to make the AED available in all responding emergency vehicles, including fire apparatuses and police vehicles that serve the White Salmon, Bingen Fire District. There’s also the desire to place an AED in high traffic areas such as the library.
The Friends discussed the cost of obtaining an AED before voting on the motion and agreeing to purchase one for the library.
