Columbia High senior forward Luis Pascual, no. 7, tallied four goals against Castle Rock on April 14, but he and the Bruins were shut out last Thursday by Toledo/Winlock in a battle for first place in Trico boys soccer.
Sverre BakkeWith two wins and a draw last week, Columbia High retained its hold on first place in 1A Trico League boys soccer standings.
The Bruins (5-0-2 in Trico, 5-2-2 overall) opened the week on April 14 with a 10-0 rout of Castle Rock.
Senior forward Luis Pas-cual scored a hat trick in the first five minutes of play and finished with four goals.
Senior forward Diego Huila found the goal twice, while junior midfielders Jose Eudave and Luis Romero, and junior forward Yvan Escoto each tallied one goal. For Escoto, it was his fourth goal of the year.
CHS also netted a goal when senior defender Isidro Ramirez caused an own goal on the Rockets’ goalkeeper when he sent in a hard cross from the left wing. The keeper got his hands on the ball but bobbled it into his own net.
Junior Jose Salguero and freshman Leo Guerrero split time in goal for CHS, but neither made a save “Castle Rock did not register a shot on goal,” said Bruins Coach Christopher Cramer.
Castle Rock’s keeper was called on to make 13 saves.
At Columbia 0, Toledo/-Winlock 0: In a battle for first place in the Trico last Thursday, defense was the calling card for both teams.
The Bruins and T/W United played 80 minutes of regulation and “even two five-minute overtime periods were not enough to crown a winner in this one,” Cramer noted.
Each side put four shots on goal, and each keeper earned four saves, Cramer said, “in a game where the defenses made it difficult to create chances.”
Most of the match was played in the middle third of the field, where “both teams were very organized on defense and comfortable in possession.”
The result helped Colum-bia hold onto first place by the slighest of margins. (The Trico League is using a points-based system this season instead of straight wins and losses: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw.)
CHS improved to 4-0-2 in league play (14 points) while T/W dropped to 4-1-1 (13 points).
The rematch will be play-ed May 7 there, on the final night of the regular season.
Columbia 2, at King’s Way 0: The Bruins scored goals in each half and the defense held the Knights to three shots on target in last Saturday’s victory in Van-couver.
The defense, led by senior Isidro Ramirez and sophomores Brady Trullinger and Jose Romero, earned its fourth shutout of 2015. Freshman goalkeeper Leo Guerrero tallied three saves.
CHS, which placed nine of 16 shots on goal, netted its first goal midway through the first half.
Freshman forward Joe Eudave got on the end of a cutback by senior Diego Huila. The shot hit off the King’s Way goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
In the second half, the Bruins earned a free kick from midfield. CHS played the ball short to junior Yvan Escoto, who hit a cross to the back post. The ball found senior forward Mario Var-gas, who poked it into the goal.
