Columbia boys basketball ends with a loss

Seton turned the game in their favor again with a big third quarter. The Cougars erupted for 30 points on offense and held the Bruins to five at the defensive end to make it a 63-41 game.

The Cougars netted 28 field goals, including 13 3-pointers, and sank 11-of-15 free throws in the contest. The Bruins made 23 field goals (five 3s) and 5-of-7 free throws.

Sophomores Jonathan Douthit and Justin Castaneda each tallied eight points for CHS.

Senior Ulices Isordia scored seven, senior Riley Haner had six, and junior Aidan Trummel chipped in five.

Columbia ended its first season under Bruins Coach Chad Myers with a 2-16 win-loss record and tied with Seton for sixth in final Trico standings at 1-11.

CHS’s lone Trico win was against Seton here on Jan. 11.

Castle Rock 51, at Columbia 37: A disciplined approach by the Bruins in their Feb. 2 Senior Night game put a scare into the visiting Rockets.

In the final issue, though, the visitors outlasted the Bruins to clinch a win that gave them a sweep of the season series. Senior guard Ulices Isordia and senior center Jabal Gilbert both scored nine points to pace Columbia.

The Rockets mounted a 16-4 lead after one quarter and led 29-15 at the intermission, but the Bruins played them even-up on the scoreboard in the second half, 22 to 22.

Rockets Coach Kevin Johnson made an offensive adjustment in the second half, though, that helped propel his team to victory. It came when he put 6-foot senior guard Brock Johnson in the low post.

The Rockets’ top scorer became a distributor as he commanded a double team. Johnson found open players and a few scoring chances for himself when they presented themselves. Johnson finished with 18 points and a handful of key assists.

Juniors Aidan Trummel and Brady Trullinger each put in five points, and senior Samuel Rowlen scored four.

Sophomores William Gross and Lewie Rowlen combined for seven points off the CHS bench.
