Columbia High volleyball closed out the non-league, non-tournament portion of its 2019 schedule last week with a match on the road to start the week and one at home to end it.
The Bruins (3-2) swept the River-side Pirates on Monday, Sept. 23, in Boardman, Ore., by set scores of 25-19, 25-10, 25-8.
Setter Veronica Guzman dished out 12 assists for CHS hitters, particularly the ones manning the middle hitter position.
Paris Happel had a team-high five kills to go with two blocks. Hannah Polkinghorn finished with four kills and two blocks.
The Bruins couldn’t get on track against the Fort Vancouver Trappers here Thursday, Sept. 26. The visitors prevailed in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-23, 25-19.
Mya Aman gave “great effort all night on defense,” Bruins Coach Jenny Hallead said but the Trappers found enough holes in the CHS defense to maintain their momentum in each set.
Kendall Clark sparked the offense with a team-high six kills as Guzman recorded a dozen assists.
Happel and Polkinghorn were active at the net in blocking roles. Each tallied five blocks. Both also got involved in the hitting attack; each had eight kills. Guzman, moreover, was the only CHS player to put all of her serves in play on a night the Bruins struggled with their accuracy.
Summing up the week, Hallead said the Bruins “came out playing flat” in both matches and weren’t “working together as a team.”
She continued, “We need to be more competitive and ready to play from the start as our league play begins. Veronica is working hard as the only setter but we need to improve our defense and our court awareness in order to make big plays and score points.”
Coming up: The Bruins began 1A Trico League play on Oct. 1 at home against King’s Way.
They travel to La Center on Oct. 3, then are at home on Oct. versus Castle Rock. The first half of Trico play ends Oct. 15.
