In their 8-0 loss to Columbia River Conference champion Hood River Valley, The Dalles had four matches that could have gone either way, but were counted as close losses in Wednesday’s league finale at The Dalles High School.
Andy Lopez lost his No. 2 singles match against Sawyer Bogard by scores of 3-6, 5-7; and at No. 4 singles, Salvador Garcia had a chance to gain an early edge in the first set, eventually losing in a tiebreaker 6-7 (4); and Hood River’s Jacob Kaplan completed the two-set sweep by a 6-2 margin in the second set.
TD’s two closest matches came at No. 3 and No. 4 doubles, as the No. 3 duo of Sanjay Ramanathan and Hayden Pashek lost to Jay Fiedler and Chris Riviello, 3-6, 4-6.
“Andy has had a great season this year playing in our number 2 singles spot,” TD head coach Shea MacNab said.
Blake Keinlen and Manuel Barragan also had a shot for an upset win at No. 4 doubles against Reece Carroll and Stefan Salmer, however, the Eagle tandem won, 6-4, 6-3.
James Pashek lost 0-6, 0-6 against HRV’s Vaughn Reardon at No. 1 singles, and Jordan Dexter dropped his No. 3 singles match with Simon Harsanyi by scores of 0-6, 0-6 for the other two singles finals.
Devam Patel and Jose Reyes, The Dalles’ No. 1 doubles tandem, were upended by Adam Harter and Ben Fick, 3-6, 2-6; and the No. 2 pairing of Ethan Martin and Pedro Lopez were swept in two sets against HRV’s Luke Harter and Arnulfo Perez in straight sets, 1-6, 2-6.
“Ethan and Devam each have played in some of the most exciting doubles matches I have seen in a while, and both Salvador and Sanjay have really challenged themselves this season. After a season or two on junior varsity, they have stepped up to the varsity roster.”
Regardless of how the season unfolds, MacNab has the program trending upward with as many as 31 out for tennis this season.
In the past, TD has had around 20 athletes out each year, so this roster is the deepest, as far as talent goes, that the team has had in several years.
“This is a fun team to watch,” MacNab said. “They are all so close in their skill levels that they have all been able to push and challenge each other in practice. This has helped raise the level of play for the entire team.”
Regional is scheduled for May 11-12 in Hermiston, and MacNab says the practices will be high-intensity to prepare his players for some grueling matches.
“We still have several guys battling each other for spots at the district tournament, which has made for an exciting spring,” MacNab said. “We are much more competitive with lots of close matches.”
