The two girls’ doubles teams of Hollee Kaseberg and Elvia Rubio and C.J. Johnson and Savannah Moe came out in dominant fashion for the Sherman Huskies, but Umatilla swept singles play and four boys matches Tuesday in a pro-set varsity tennis contest played in Moro.
Since a long layoff, the Huskies were able to do some good things on the court, so it is something to build on, said head coach Kalie Rolfe.
“It is a difficult adjustment to go from practice to match play, but our schedule picks up for the next three weeks, so I expect to see them improve all the way up to sub-district,” Rolfe added.
Kaseberg and Rubio faced Mey Lopez-Ortega and Fatima Sanchez at No. 1 doubles, and the Sherman tandem came through with power serves and solid net play to tally an 8-3 winner.
As impressive as Kaseberg and Rubio were, Johnson and Moe raised their game to another level in their No. 2 match against Diana Gutierrez and Chyanne Hinsty, scoring an 8-0 shutout.
“Our girls’ doubles teams continued to play well,” Rolfe said. “Kaseberg and Rubio are playing tough mentally, having improved their mental as well as their physical game. Johnson and Moe, our second girls’ doubles team, continue to get better week-to-week.”
On the singles side, Meghan Belshe, Gabby Rubio, Amy Dabulskis and Alima Abdulatif lost their matches by an average of 6.25 points.
Belshe faced one of her toughest tests of the season against Sidney Webb at the No. 1 spot.
On this day, however, Webb had her racket game on point, taking an 8-4 tally to a win.
“Our girls’ singles lost some hard fought matches today as well,” Rolfe said. “Meghan held her own with Sidney Webb and I look forward to watching them play again.”
Luke Lawrence, Sherman’s No. 1 boys’ tennis player, lost his match to Doug Gomez, and Garak Casper could not find a groove in his loss to Junior Cona-Cona.
Brett Lane lost to Gio Armenta and Umatilla’s Eddie Madrigal came out ahead at No. 4 with an 8-2 win over Carlos Ambriz.
Sherman was in Ione for a league matchup today.
The boys take on The Dalles at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 25.
“We get back to work tomorrow to tighten up some areas of our game that need work across the board,” Rolfe said.
