THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks boys and girls wrestling teams competed in two Special District 4 events in three days, prior to their week off for Christmas break.
The Riverhawks, guided by second-year Coach Barry Abrams, faced the Madras High White Buffaloes in a dual meet Dec. 19 at Madras High School. The Riverhawks were shorthanded as some athletes were unable to compete because of either illness or injuries. The 11-member boys squad won two out of nine matches, and the six-member girls team won four of six matches.
Sophomore Brenden Manciu (215 pounds) and junior Harley Scott (138) won their matches versus Madras.
The Riverhawks then competed in the 10-team Molalla Mayhem tournament, Dec. 21 at Molalla High School. Junior Josh Brackenbury (4-0) took first place in the 175-pound weight division; Harley Scott took third place and improved his record this season to 12-3. Brackenbury has won two tournaments, took third place in another event, and he has a 14-1 overall record.
“We did much better at Molalla and Josh just had a dominating performance,” said Abrams.
The Riverhawks’ girls squad tied for first place in team scoring with the Molalla High Indians. “What we’re really focusing on doing now is we’re just hoping to get everyone healthy and have them all at practice soon so we tune-up our performance level and just try to get better,” said Abrams.
