The South Wasco County Redsides are one win away from ending the year with a two-game winning streak and have a chance to finish the regular season fifth in the Big Sky Conference standings.
For that to happen, the Redsides need to take care of business at 7 p.m. tonight, Oct. 28. in Maupin against Henry Padberg, Aaron Smythe and the Ione Cardinals.
“Ione is a big team, slower, but fairly physical,” said SWC head coach Mike Waine. “I feel we match up well this week, as both teams have struggled against the rest of the league, Dufur, Arlington, Sherman and Perrydale, specifically.”
The Redsides have allowed the most points in the Big Sky Conference, 343 points, and have to contend with a run-based Cardinal offense that averages 14 points a game and racked up 56 points against Mitchell-Spray two weeks ago.
SWC may have caught a break with the injury to Ione’s dual-threat quarterback Cord Flynn, but the Redsides are also without the services of their leading-tackler, Ty Herlocker.
The Redside offense has scored 67 points in seven games, and has struggled with several injuries to the running back position, but Dawson Herlocker is at quarterback, Nick Ward and Andrew Lindley provide receiving threats and Haven Stephenson is slated to catch passes from the tight end position.
Keith Kegel is back at running back and Michael Cuevas will see time on a few running plays.
Defensively, Ione has given up 42 points or more four times this season, so there should be opportunities for the Redsides to hit the end zone.
“Offensively, we are hoping to move the ball, pound the middle, and hit the corners with sweeps,” Waine said. “Keith should be back this week, and we have been working with Michael Cuevas at tailback as well. I believe Michael can beat those guys to the corner, and he should be able to move the ball successfully.”
