Once the calendar flipped to October, the Dufur Rangers have been an unstoppable force on the volleyball court.
The No. 11-ranked Rangers blanked Sherman to amass their ninth consecutive win in a row, seventh by sweep in a Big Sky Conference match Thursday in Moro.
Tianna Ellis had 12 kills, Chloe Beeson had seven kills, five aces, a block, an assist and two digs, and Sydney Reed followed up with 19 assists, three aces, two kills and three digs.
“The girls played together as a team,” said Dufur coach Jody Weaver. “We had some good serving streaks. Tianna led the charge with strong hitting. Chloe kept us going with stellar defense.”
Dufur won the first set by a dominant 25-7 margin, and the roll kept going in the second set, as they pulled off a 25-11 win to go ahead 2-0.
Facing a chance to grab their 11th sweep overall this year, the Rangers did not blink an eye, as they dropped a 25-11 score on Sherman for the win.
Emily DePriest tallied four kills, Karaline Johnson was good for three aces, a kill and two digs, and Haili Wolf-DePriest reeled off an all-around split of five aces and three kills.
During this impressive nine-match streak, the Rangers (13-8 overall, 10-1 league) have lost just two sets to move into a deadlock atop the league standings with Ione.
Even with the current run, Weaver is hoping her team can add more elements to their repertoire.
“I don’t think I am ever 100 percent happy ever. I want them to continue to grow and improve,” the first-year coach said. “Our offense needs tweaking. Some nights it is stronger than others and we need to be more consistent with that as well. It is getting better all the time. We need to keep improving, so that is definitely one of our goals that we have to accomplish.”
Dufur is in Spray Saturday for a league double dual against Mitchell-Spray and Condon-Wheeler starting at 10 a.m.
Monday, the Rangers are in Molalla for a pair of non-league matches versus North Douglas and Country Christian at 4 p.m.
Sherman (5-13, 2-8) is tied for the sixth and final district play-in spot with Mitchell-Spray. The Huskies travel to Ione for a double dual against Ione and Arlington at 10 a.m. and noon.
“They keep improving every time they hit the floor,” said Sherman coach Carrie Danchok. “They are going into each match with the mindset of wanting to get better and these games will be ours. We just got to keep working hard.”
