SOUTH WASCO guard Travis Hayes, right, drives past his defender for an open look in boy’s basketball action this season in Maupin. Saturday in Ione, the Redsides shot 70 percent from the field in taking a 71-32 win over Ione.
The South Wasco County Redsides shot 28 of 42 from the field and turned 25 steals into transition points in running to a 71-32 win over Ione Saturday in Big Sky conference boys’ basketball play at Ione High School.
All told, the Redsides dominated in every facet of the game from rebounding, turnovers, shooting percentage and ball distribution.
Of the 28 field goals, 16 came off of assists, as seven different players posted those marks, led by the six from senior point guard Tony Holliday.
“We shot a lot of high percentage shots tonight and made them,” said SWC coach Jim Hull. “We got a lot of scoring opportunities from our defense. We were able to get out there and get in the passing lanes and put them on their heels a little bit. Those are the types of efforts you got to have if you want to get another league win.”
SWC jumped ahead 18-6 through one quarter and padded that 12-point lead using a 13-6 run in the second period to go out in front, 31-12 at the break.
Both teams notched 17 points each in the third frame, but the Redsides finished strong on a 23-3 run to seal their second road win of the season.
Brody Myers paced the Redside offense with 15 points and four rebounds, and Loreto Morelli shot 7 for 8 from the floor for his 14 points.
Holliday was a perfect 6 for 6 for 13 points, and Travis Hayes scored 12 points, dished off four assists, pulled down two rebounds and had a team-high eight steals.
After suffering through consecutive losses to Sherman and Horizon Christian, Hull is happy to see his team bounce back for a big run in late January and February.
“We used this game as a chance to start a new streak. It was good to get this win,” Hull said. “We then have Mitchell and Arlington next, so we want to use this as kind of a way to push us forward and start the second half of the season to get some wins at home and get more momentum in the final half of our league season.”
SWC (7-7 overall, 3-3 league) is in fourth place, just one game ahead of Mitchell-Spray. The Redsides next host Mitchell-Spray (6-7, 2-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
