Iliana Telles is making her jump to the Division I ranks.
Portland State golf coach Kailin Downs has announced the signing of Telles to a National Letter of Intent for the 2017-18 academic year.
Telles, a senior at The Dalles High School, also competes in volleyball and basketball.
She has placed in the top-10 at the Oregon 5A Golf Championship in her first three seasons.
Telles turned in an eighth-place finish as a freshman with a score of 176 at Emerald Valley Country Club in Creswell.
She then carded a 155 for a fourth-place tie at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis as a sophomore.
Last spring, Telles carded a two-day total of 158 to secure sixth place and an individual state qualification at the Special District 2 Golf Tournament at Indian Creek Golf Course in Hood River.
At the 2016 5A State Golf Tournament on Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Telles started off the second day of golf play with two straight bogeys.
Over the final 16 holes, however, she rebounded with nine pars and four birdies to tally the lowest total amongst the field for a 73 and a two-day total of 150 to end up tied for second place.
“Within golf, Iliana’s mental game has grown, especially during the final round of last year’s State Golf Championships, where she started with a bogey, bogey,” said TD head golf coach Dan Telles. “A majority of players would have gone deeper into a funk, whereas Iliana bore down, got refocused and shot 1-under the rest of the 16 holes.”
In basketball, Iliana was named first team all-Columbia River Conference and team MVP each of the last two seasons.
She also earned second team all-league recognition in volleyball in 2015.
Telles was selected as The Dalles High School Female Athlete of the Year for the 2015-16 school sports season.
Coach Telles expressed pride in seeing another one of his children make the jump to the collegiate ranks.
Damian and Nadia already made the jump a few years back, so having Iliana join those two put him beyond words.
“Our children have been fortunate to have had success on the athletic fields,” coach Telles said. “To have the opportunities to continue on into college is a combination of hard work and good fortune.”
Iliana is set to join the Vikings with fellow freshman, Yun-Chu Huang.
The two newcomers will join a young roster that features only one senior, two sophomores and three freshmen.
Currently, the Lady Vikings are on a school-record scoring pace with a 297.7 team scoring average.
