The Sherman Huskies racked up 267 yards rushing, and senior quarterback Kyle Fields completed 6 of 8 passes for 119 yards in a 66-0 shutout victory over South Wasco County Friday in a Big Sky conference tilt played in Moro.
Jacob Justesen totaled 100 yards with two scores and he caught three passes for 69 yards and another touchdown, as Sherman scored four times in the opening quarter and converted on three extra points to lead, 30-0.
In the second quarter, the Huskies tacked on three more trips to the end zone, on a seven-yard run by Maverick Winslow, a 26-yard jaunt by Justesen and a 29-yard run by Isaiah Coles to swell the lead to 54-0 with five minutes and 25 seconds left in the half.
Coles would later add a 26-yard touchdown in the third quarter, and Reese Blake capped the scoring on a one-yard plunge.
Sherman converted 6 of 9 extra points, two by Max Martin, and one each by Justesen, Fields, Treve Martin and Winslow.
Coles had one catch for nine yards, Treve Martin had a 35-yard grab and Max Martin ended up with one catch for 16 yards.
Sherman head coach Bill Blevins said his offense was efficient and that they were able to use overall team speed to their advantage.
“We had an effective and balanced scoring attack by both ground and air tonight,” Blevins said. “We executed well in the first half and we were able to get a lot of reps to everyone. It was a great team effort.”
Chris Ballesteros had 45 yards rushing and Blake added 13 yards on the ground in the second half.
The Redsides started Dawson Herlocker at quarterback, and the senior used his legs to break off some gains on the ground, and Andrew Lindley served as receiver and made the plays when he had opportunities.
Late in the second half, Lindley, from his quarterback position, broke loose for a 57-yard run, but just missed hitting the end zone for a score.
On the defensive side of the ball, Ty Herlocker was everywhere on the field making plays from his middle linebacker spot with tackles on 70 percent of Husky plays and also had a fumble recovery.
“Ty did a fantastic job,” said SWC head coach Mike Waine. “Ty’s ability to read the play is improving weekly. Ty’s biggest attribute is his ability to dent people’s facemasks. He loves to hit, and when Ty hits you, you’re going to feel it for a day or two.”
Waine also complimented his team’s inside run game and pass defense, calling it the best this Redside team has done all season, adding that the defensive backs were competitive and did not allow many uncovered Husky receivers a chance to get downfield for open looks.
Waine is looking forward to another good week so of repetitions on the practice field this week, as SWC (0-3 overall, 0-2 league) makes a trip to Perrydale for a league contest at 7 p.m. Friday.
“Overall, the SWC Redsides are improving week-after-week,” Waine said. “We are going to continue to build the program, fight every week, and do what we can as coaches and players to scratch out some wins this year.”
Sherman moves up to No. 14 in the rankings after Friday’s win and is in a first-place tie with No. 10 Arlington (3-0, 2-0) atop the Big Sky standings.
The Huskies (3-1, 2-0) next pay host to the No. 2-ranked Dufur Rangers at 7 p.m. Friday.
