SHERMAN’S Isaiah Coles (left) powers through the paint in front of Horizon Christian defenders Mason Bloomster (12) and Wesley Johnston in Tuesday’s game in Hood River. Horizon won, 71-56.
Mason Bloomster and Jared Davis combined for 47 points to lead No. 1-ranked Horizon Christian to a 71-56 win over No. 9 Sherman Tuesday in a Big Sky Conference boys’ hoops showdown in Hood River.
“It was an education for our kids to play Horizon,” said Sherman head coach Bill Blevins. “They definitely took advantage of all of our weaknesses and miscues like a good team should.”
With the home crowd behind them, the Hawks (9-2 overall, 1-0 league) started clicking for a 22-11 run after the opening quarter of play.
Looking at an 11-point deficit, the Huskies inched closer with a 17-14 output to make it, 36-28 at halftime.
Things appeared to be trending in the right direction for Sherman, but Horizon finished a 21-14 run in the third quarter to 57-42.
The Huskies totaled 20 field goals, six from 3-point territory and added a 10 for 16 mark from the line.
Max Martin hit four 3-pointers on his way to a team-high 16 points, and Isaiah Coles was good for 12 points in the scorebook.
Austin Kaseberg had 10 points, Kyle Fields ended up with nine and Treve Martin poured in seven points.
Bloomster led Horizon Christian with 25 points, Davis added 22.
“We have a lot of improvement to make if we are going to compete at that level,” Blevins said. “The good news is we are young and coachable, so I believe we can learn a lot from this game.”
At 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sherman (6-2, 1-1) at 5:30 p.m. hosts South Wasco.
