HERMISTON – Dufur Rangers and Ione Cardinals could not settle Big Sky conference district matters during regulation, so the two teams, looking to extend their season, hit the hardwood for four more minutes in a spirited overtime session.
Four different Ranger players hit baskets in overtime and the defense held Ione at bay for a 39-34 win Saturday in Hermiston to secure third place and a state sub-round berth.
“Give the girls credit, we had a couple of them step up and hit some big shots to start the overtime period to give us some separation,” said Dufur coach Hollie Darden. “It was the difference in the game.”
Taylor Darden started the overtime scoring for Dufur with a jumper to make it 32-30 Dufur with three minutes and 27 seconds left.
After an Ione turnover, Ranger sophomore Sydney Reed grabbed a pass from Hannah Harris and coasted down the paint for a layup to swell the lead to 34-30.
Ione committed another miscue on its next time up the floor, and Ranger senior Aimeelyn Miller cashed in that opportunity with a jump shot to extend the cushion to six points.
Lauren Garrett pulled Ione to a 36-32 deficit, but her team went on to miss their next six shots and misfired on free throw.
Between those misses, Harris had a layup and Chloe Beeson sank a free throw to cap the scoring.
Taylor Darden had 12 points, Miller was good for 11 and both Reed and Tianna Ellis finished with four points apiece, as Dufur shot 7 of 14 from the line.
Kaitlin Garrett paced the Cardinals with 12 points and Holland and Jessi Flynn got six points apiece.
Although Dufur is 5-2 in its last seven games, the team has struggled a bit offensively with just 37.1 points a game.
Several teams are dealing with injuries, but coach Darden is hoping his team can find a second wind.
“We did enough to win the game today, but I think that if we want to continue this season, we are going to have to come together a little bit more as a team and kids are going to have to step up and decide whether or not they want to get up and make a difference,” coach Darden said.
