The Dalles’ Jordan Wetmore went down at the end of the first inning while trying to make it to third base. Wetmore suffered an ankle injury and is listed as day-to-day, although Manager David Hough expects him to play Friday afternoon against Ontario.
Pitcher Trenton Hough was in peak form against West Linn Thursday evening, throwing four shut-out innings.
It might have been a bit of a slow start for the baseball team, but it turned out to be a very good night for The Dalles 15U Babe Ruth All-Stars.
Playing at Traner Field in Hood River, the team from The Dalles used timely hitting and solid pitching to methodically overpower West Linn, winning by a final tally of 11-1.
Although The Dalles put two runs across in the first inning, the early lead came at a big cost when Jordan Wetmore suffered an ankle injury while going for third base late in the inning. Wetmore was down for several minutes as trainers came to his aid and then helped him off the field.
“It’s a really bad ankle sprain, and he is day-to-day,” Manager David Hough said Friday morning.
Hough explained the injury happened because Wetmore “waited too late to slide” as he approached the bag at third.
“If you slide late, you’re gonna hurt something,” Hough said.
Despite the injury, Hough said he expects Wetmore to play in Friday’s game.
“He begged me to go back in, but there’s a lot more baseball if we keep winning, so I kept him out,” Hough said.
The injury bug bit the team again later in the game, as Jordan Trout pulled his hamstring.
“He pulled it real bad,” Hough said.
Although the final score reflected a blowout win, Hough said the team didn’t seem to be completely ready to go at the beginning.
“I wish we’d started it a little bit sooner,” Hough said, adding that overall he was pleased with the team’s effort.
“Our pitching did well. Trenton (Hough) gave us four shut-out innings, and then we brought in Austin Meresse and Brandon Smiley in the fifth inning to shut them down,” Hough said.
West Linn brought one runner home in the final inning, but that was essentially after the game had been decided.
Next up, on Friday afternoon, The Dalles will go up against Snake River Valley, a team from Ontario. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Hood River.
With injuries to two of his players, Hough said the next game will be especially challenging.
“If those two can’t go, it really changes my lineup,” Hough said. “Trout is like a little speed demon, and Jordan (Wetmore) is one of our top pitchers. If he can’t push off, that’s a struggle. But we have a ‘next guy up’ mentality, that’s how we put it.”
Hough said his team is now focused on Snake River Valley.
“If we win today (Friday), we’re in the championship,” Hough said.
If The Dalles tops the team from Ontario, the 15U All-Stars will play for the title Saturday at 10 a.m., with the opponent yet to be determined. The championship game will be at Hood River’s Traner Field.
