THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks’ Class 4A boys and girls wrestling teams competed in their first home meet in two years in Kurtz Gym in the five-team Special District 4 The Dalles Invitational tournament Dec. 17.
The Riverhawks had 20 boys and 10 girls competing, the most in recent history at a tournament. They had a solid performance from numerous wrestlers, including juniors Josh Brackenbury and Harley Scott.
Coach Barry Abrams said: “Unfortunately, we didn’t have any home meets last year because of the way the schedule was, and we had one tourney canceled because of inclement weather. It was great to have a home meet in Kurtz Gym with a big crowd there, too, and most of the kids wrestled really well.”
The Riverhawks won four of six matches versus Corbett. The Riverhawks and McLoughlin split 12 matches, and The Dalles won four out-of-five matches versus Echo/Stanfield. The Riverhawk girls won three matches and lost five against Estacada.
“We have a very young team (four seniors), but we were very competitive against all the schools at the tourney,” said Abrams. “We had 15 wrestlers at the meet who are in their first year of The Dalles High School wrestling program. We had some wrestlers who got their first wins ever too, so that was very nice.”
The Riverhawks will compete in their sixth event of the season Dec. 28 in the Mac-Hi Christmas tournament at McLoughlin High School in Milton-Freewater.
