HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley scored 36 first-quarter points to overwhelm host Putnam, 49-6, in a Special District 1 football game on Oct. 25 in Milwaukie, setting up a Nov. 1 district championship contest against visiting Glencoe.
The win set up a 7 p.m. Glencoe at HRV showdown game with the 2024 District 1 title on the line. Glencoe (6-2, 6-0 NWOC), a Class 6A school in all other sports, has clinched a Class 5A state playoff berth and will win the title outright with a win. A win by Hood River will clinch the Eagles (7-1, 5-1) one of the district’s two automatic playoff berths into the 16-team state bracket, and HRV also will share the district crown.
The Eagles, who were ranked tenth in 5A entering this week, likely will be ranked high enough at the end of the season to earn one of five additional statewide wild card playoff berths — no matter the outcome of the Glencoe and other district games.
Glencoe, ranked 12th, leads the District 1 standings, followed by 10th-ranked Hood River in second. Fourteenth-ranked La Salle and Hillsboro, ranked 11th, are tied for third, each with 6-2 records, 4-2 in district play. La Salle plays its final regular season game at Forest Grove while Hillsboro hosts winless Putnam.
Hood River last won a conference football championship in 1991 while playing in Class 3A. The Eagles finished second in Special District 1 (albeit with some different schools) in 2021.
At Putnam, Hood River received three early touchdown runs from Bam Layna and two TD passes by quarterback Davis Parr to burst out to a 42-0 halftime lead. Layna rushed 13 times for 123 yards. Defensively, Hood River intercepted three Putnam passes in the first half and two more after the break. Noah Spurlock-Weaver had three picks for the Eagles. The game was played with a running clock in the second half.
Parr’s touchdown passes were a 48-yard strike on a screen play to Toby Stintzi to close out the opening period, and a 15-yarder to Davin Synder earlier in the quarter. Isa Luna added a 2-yard TD run before halftime, and JR Mendez scored on a 27-yard run in the second half for HRV. Parr finished 8-for-8 passing for 124 yards.
