The OSAA Class 4A Tri-Valley Conference champion The Dalles High Riverhawks notched a 13-4 road win May 15 over the No. 6-ranked Junction City High Tigers in a nonleague baseball game.
The victory was the fourth straight for the No. 7-ranked Riverhawks (20-7). The Riverhawks begin the 16-team state tournament with a first-round home matchup May 21 versus the No. 10-ranked Philomath High Warriors (18-8).
“The boys are excited about being in the state playoffs and anytime we can have a big home playoff game at Quinton Street Ballpark, it gives us a pretty good home field advantage,” said Coach Pat Clark.
The May 21 winner advances to the quarterfinals May 24.
The Riverhawks six-man pitching rotation of starter Avery Schwartz and relievers Cooper Cummings, Sam Shaver, Trey Hodges, Nolan Donivan and Will Booth combined on the mound for 14 strikeouts and two walks.
Leading 5-2 after three innings, the Riverhawks took control with a three-run fourth, highlighted by RBI singles by Booth (2-for-4) and Schwartz (4-for-5, four RBI, home run).
The Riverhawks’ three-run sixth was highlighted by a Schwartz RBI double and a two-RBI double by Hodges (1-for-1). Finley Corbin (2-for-4, three RBI) knocked in two more runs in the seventh with his double. The Riverhawks outhit the Tigers, 16-6, with three of the hits coming from Luciano Alvarado (3-for-4) and two more from Cummings.
