The Dalles High School kicked off its 2024 track and field season under sunny skies at its own Mullen Leavitt Invitational meet March 16.
The 65-degree weather was a welcome change for athletes, who have been training in the usual cold, wet late February, early March Gorge offerings from Mother Nature.
The sunny day led to some personal bests for The Dalles athletes, led by senior Madelyn Harrison, who won the 300-meter low hurdles and long jump. Harrison raced to a 52.08-second clocking in the lows a couple of hours after she had long jumped 16-feet, 2 inches. Harrison was also second in the 100.
Senior teammate Lilly Adams swept the sprint races — 100, 200 and 400, and junior Alaina Casady was second in two quick distance races. Adams had a busy day with times of 13.48 (110), 27.5 (200), and 1:02.41 (400).
Casady and Trout Lake senior Myana Stock dueled in the 1500 meters with Stock — last year’s Class 1A 1500 runner-up — winning in personal best 5:10.28 to 5:10.83 for Casady. A couple of hours later in the 800, the junior from The Dalles and South Wasco County sophomore Jayda Iverson went head-to-head. Both ran personal bests — Iverson in 2:33.80 to Casady’s 2:33.95.
The Dalles girls also received a win from Nayeli Vergara in the 3000 meters and its 4x400 relay team of Ruby Jaimes Mora, Abigail Pope, Casady, and Kestley Hodges.
The Riverhawk boys won three individual events and both relays. Freshman David McCracken tied for first in the 100, as he and Ione’s Henry Giefing each ran the race in 24 seconds in different heats. Sophomore Tyson Long won the 1500 in 4:26.05 and later finished third in the 800. And sophomore Derek Goulart won the high jump in a personal best 6 feet, 2 inches.
The Dalles’ relay sweep included Nolan Cates, Anthony Jara, River McClure, and MacCracken in the 4x100 (45.65); and Long, Noah Preston, Vincent Ziegenhagen, and Egan Ziegenhagen in the 4x400 (3:44.43). Cates and Jara later ran personal bests in the 100, and McClure was second in the 300 intermediate hurdles.
The Dalles field event performances were highlighted by junior Julian Morehouse, who won last year’s Tri-Valley League pole vault title at 14-1. He and Trout Lake junior Sawyer Dean were three-feet clear of the rest of last week’s Mullen Leavitt pole vault field. Dean, the two-time defending Class 1A state champion, won at 13-6 while Morehouse was second at 13-0.
