THE DALLES — The Dalles High’s boys track and field team peaked at the right time this season, as the Riverhawks earned the fourth-place trophy at the 2025 Class 4A state meet in Eugene.
Coach Garth Miller’s team scored 42 points to tie with Scappoose in the two-day meet at historic Hayward Field. The Riverhawks clinched fourth place when their 4x400 meter relay finished fourth in a season best 3 minutes, 25.98 seconds. The team included Vincent Ziegenhagen, Tyson Long, Noah Preston, and River McClure. The finish gave The Dalles five team points, which boosted them into a tie with Scappoose (which finished a non-scoring ninth place in the timed 4x400 final). The state meet 4x400 relay time is the second fastest in The Dalles school history.
A short time earlier, McClure, a senior, had finished second in the 300-meter hurdles in a lifetime best and school record 37.22 seconds. That time — and the time of event winner Rasean Jones (37.03) of Baker — eclipsed the previous 4A state-meet record (held by Jones). McClure bounced back from the close finish in a huge way by clocking a 49.26-second 400-meter relay split.
“He ran the race of his life,” Miller said of McClure’s hurdles race, which would have won every other classification at the state meet this season. “He broke his own … record for the fourth time this year … a fantastic race for him.”
Senior Julian Morehouse won an individual state crown in the pole vault, adding 10 points to the team total. Morehouse cleared a personal best 14 feet, 7.5 inches (4.46 meters). He finished his prep track and field career as No. 3 on the all-time vault list.
Coach Miller said: “Our boys team had multiple great performances; I’m really proud of those guys.”
Long, a junior, also added some individual team points (eight) with his runner-up finish in the boys 800 meters in 1:59.4. Junior Derek Goulart was fourth in the boys high jump at 6-1.5. David McCracken finished fifth in the 200 in 22.63 seconds (PR) and seventh in the 100 (11.09). Aiden Erickson (9:29.82, 3000) and Noah Preston (53.14, 400) also competed in individual events at state, but did not place.
The Dalles’ Tri-Valley Conference foe, Crook County, won the boys state title and Madras of the TVC was sixth.
“I was really proud of our 15 athletes that qualified for state,” Miller said of his boys and girls teams, which had seven individual PRs and 10 podium (top eight) finishes.
Senior Alaina Casady led The Dalles’ girls’ team, which finished 20th with 9.5 points. Casady ran lifetime bests in the 3000 meters of 10:38.92 (sixth place) and in the 1500 in 4:53.5. Those times rank her fifth on The Dalles’ all-time event lists.
“She is a very hard worker and has led by example at meets and practices the last four years, and has had a very successful high school career,” Miller said. “She will be missed for sure next year.”
Freshman Willow Ziegenhagen finished in a tie for fifth place in the high jump at 5-0.25 (1.53 meters) and also ran a leg on the Riverhawks’ 4x400 relay, which was sixth.
The relay team also included Laura Black, Ebany Mondragon and Marie-Louise McCracken and ran a season best 4:12.58. Laci Hoylman (99-9.25 javelin) and Sydney Newby (high jump) also competed at state for The Dalles.
