THE DALLES — After winning eight of their last nine OSAA Class 4A baseball games, the defending Tri-Valley Conference (TVC) champion The Dalles High Riverhawks are on the verge of capturing a second consecutive league title.
With five games remaining on their schedule, the No. 13-ranked Riverhawks (8-1 TVC, 10-10 overall) are atop the six-team league standings. The Riverhawks won two-of-three games last week, including a key May 1, 12-9 road victory over the second place and No. 10-ranked Molalla High Indians (6-3 TVC, 14-5 overall).
The Riverhawks built a 4-2 lead after three innings. Following two scoreless frames, the Riverhawks extended their advantage to 9-5 in the sixth. The Riverhawks were outscored 4-3 in the seventh, but they held on to get the win.
Senior starting pitcher Avery Schwartz (2-for-3, five RBI) led the Riverhawks offensively. Schwartz combined with relief pitchers Gunnar Bustos and Evan Ortega for eight strikeouts, five walks and eight hits allowed.
The Riverhawks split two TVC matchups with the No. 16-ranked Estacada High Rangers (4-5 TVC, 11-8 overall) last week, with both squads winning road games. The Dalles had solid offensive contributions from Ortega (2-for-4, RBI), Finley Corbin (3-for-4, RBI), Trey Hodges (RBI) and Chase Peterson (1-for-3, RBI).
The Riverhawks won 9-5 over the Rangers April 28. Following a first inning 2-2 deadlock, the Riverhawks took control of the game, by outscoring the Rangers 7-1 over the next three innings to build a 9-3 advantage.
The Riverhawks were led offensively by Will Booth (1-for-1), Hodges (1-for-3), Ortega (1-for-4, RBI), Sawyer Dray (1-for-3, RBI) and Cody Agidius (2-for-3, four RBI). Starting pitcher Ortega combined with relief pitcher Hodges for nine strikeouts and six hits allowed.
The Riverhawks followed two days later with a 7-2 loss to the Rangers. The Riverhawks struggled offensively, as they scored just two runs in the sixth inning. Agidius (1-for-3, two RBI), Corbin (1-for-3), Dray (1-for-4), Peterson (1-for-3) and Hodges (1-for-3) each had hits for The Dalles.
The Riverhawks had a key matchup May 5 versus Molalla. The Riverhawks play their next contest May 7 at 5:30 p.m. at home versus the Crook County High Cowboys (3-6 TVC, 5-11 overall), followed by a 4:30 p.m. road game May 8 against the Madras High White Buffaloes (1-8 TVC, 3-15 overall).
