Last week’s league action at Hood River’s fun spot, Orchard Lanes, once again produced an amazing and diverse group of stars who bowled the most over their averages to make our famous Team of the Week.
As Jack Palance dramatically said in Batman to his right hand man, Jack (The Joker) Nicholson: “You are my No. 1 guy!” That accolade was earned last week by none other than the convivial lefty, John Miller, who has sure found the range lately as this is his second turn on the fab five in a matter of weeks. Big John, who is an avid bowler and has been competing in two leagues a week for years at Orchard Lanes, ripped the sticks a new one in the Wednesday afternoon senior Colts & Fillies League where he popped nice scratch 224 and 215 games and a superb 618 series. That mighty fine effort was his best of the season and it just may be the first 600 series he’s ever rolled. John was the clear-cut top shooter at the lanes last week, finishing up this session a whopping 168 pins over his average. John: better get some sun tan lotion — if you keep this up, all this limelight may burn!
Grabbing the No. 2 spot on our big five is Mary Boyle, who starred in the Thursday afternoon senior Lads & Lassies League. Mary bowled great in all three games of her series and finished 122 pins over her average for the session. This is the first time that Mary has ever made the coveted team of the week. Welcome to a pretty exclusive club, Mary. Now that you’ve done it once, we expect to see you pummel those pins again.
We don’t have to say much more than Bill Pullum is one of the best bowlers around, period! Bill has more perfect 300 games and scratch 800 sets on his resume than just about anybody, anywhere. We’ve actually lost count he has so many, and Bill is that good. If you want to see a big hooking power ball in action, catch Bill in a pin-spilling session and you will be dazzled! Bill fired a scratch 713 series in the high-powered Wednesday night Fraternal League, which was 110 pins over his average, nabbing the third spot on our classy crew. This is the second time Bill has made the team of the week this season.
Batting clean-up on our super squad is none other than grandpa Jesse Flores, who mangled the sticks in the Monday night Industrial League where he just missed a scratch 600 set by a mere two pins. Nevertheless, Jesse finished this outing 102 pins over his average. Jesse is an enthusiastic bowler and he has had a pretty good season as the down-and-in specialist has now made the team of the week three times this season. He’s another of our dependable regulars who has been battling the sticks for years in two leagues a week.
Sneaking in to anchor our quality quintet is the inimitable Dan Green who was way over his average in all three games of his session in the Industrial league. Dan has also been a dependable regular in league action at Orchard Lanes for years. If you look at last Monday’s match that Dan’s team, Mid-Columbia Diesel, had with last season’s champs and round winner this season, the formidable 3 Fingers Deep team, it is clear that he was the “straw that stirred the drink” as ex-Yankee Reggie Jackson used to say about himself. Dan bowled 98 pins over his average, powering his team to a 26 to 4 point win over a tough bunch. That’s really what this is all about: team bowling! This is also the first time that Dan has ever made the team of the week. Great bowling everybody!
