Scores really heated up in last week’s league action on the friendly boards at Hood River’s Orchard Lanes. Starring were Pat Olson, Jeff Brittle, Lynn Spellman, Mike Roberts, Bob Reid, Bill Pullum, Casey Barker, Mick Sherrell, Becky Beckner, and Dee Hert. Kind of reads like a who’s who in Hood River bowling! Pat produced a prodigious scratch 756 series, the highest of the season so far, in the Wednesday night Fraternal League. He was uber consistent, spinning solid scratch 256, 253 and 247 games. That’s some mighty fine bowling folks! Pat’s team, Montavon’s Berries was not one bit nice to their opponents, Orchard Lanes, taking 24 out of a possible 25 points, ouch!
Jeff, Lynn, Mike, Bob and Becky were so hot they made the team of the week! The renowned Mr. Brittle, famous around here for rolling the biggest hook in town, was really on fire in the Fraternal, notching a sparkling scratch 289 game that boosted him to a super scratch 715 series. It’s always a feather in your cap to climb over that magical 700 barrier, it’s a clear-cut indicator of some really good bowling. You may luck into a few strikes here and there, but you’re not going to luck into a 700 series — that kind of shooting takes talent. Jeff finished up 157 pins over his average, topping everybody in league action last week. Oh, and by the way, Jeff is a mainstay on the Montavon’s Berries team. Don’t you feel sorry for that poor Orchard Lanes team now; it’s pretty hard to beat big shooters like Pat and Jeff when they are en fuego!
Lynn Spellman put that patented hex of his on those hapless sticks as he so often does in the Wednesday afternoon Colts & Fillies League, where he posted a magical scratch 685 series. That effort was 148 pins over his average and it marks the second week in a row that the prolific Mr. Spellman made the team of the week
Golfing superstar Mike Roberts demonstrated his prowess over some different sticks last week, scattering a big bunch of bowling sticks in the Monday night Industrial League. Instead of birdies and eagles, the talented Mr. Roberts racked up a flock of turkeys last week, finishing his outing 146 pins over his average after rolling scratch 236 and 224 games. That stellar performance keyed his team, Mid-Columbia Diesel, to a 24-6 beating of their opponents, Weatherly Painting, who just can’t catch a break lately after running into tough teams the past couple of weeks.
In the same session, Bob Reid was “in the zone” with that down-and-in game of his as he spilled a scratch 657 series that was highlighted by a nifty scratch 235 game. Those tall numbers put Bob 141 pins over his average for the night as he led his team, Randy’s Painting to a 25-5 point blitz over their opponents, Hood River Supply, extending their league lead.
Anchoring our fab five this week is Becky Beckner, who basks in the limelight after tossing a fine scratch 546 set that was capped by a scratch 203 game in the Tuesday Nite Mixed League. We’re glad to see Becky back in action after a short layoff. She’s got a whole lot of game and, why not, she experienced the exhilarating highs of competitive match play action while starring with the award-winning HRV girls bowling team a few years ago. In an interesting note, Becky just edged her current and former teammate on that same HRV girls bowling team, Shaiyan Brittle, who had a scratch 202 game in the same outing. These two young stars have a bright future in bowling.
Bill Pullum, Casey Barker, Mick Sherrell and Dee Hert may not have made the team of the week, but they sure had their “A” games on display. The incredibly talented Mr. Pullum, one of the best bowlers you will ever see, fired a scratch 685 series in the Fraternal which included a strike filled scratch 279 game. Actually, because Bill is so talented, this may just be his “B” game! We’re so glad to see Bill back in action; things just aren’t the same without him. He rolls a tremendously powerful ball that makes the pins dance like crazy, we miss seeing all that action.
Fortunately we always have Mr. Excitement, Casey Barker, to watch. No one comes close to matching the enthusiasm that Casey has for bowling; he’s always an optimistic bundle of energy on the lanes, so much fun to be around. Casey posted a lofty scratch 683 set in the same session and was the force keying his team to a 23-2 point win for the night.
How about Mick Sherrell? We’ve been watching him pummel the pins for years in the Senior Monte Carlo and always thought he’d be a great league bowler. Well, the proof is in the pudding now as Mick finally joined a league and proved he’s got what it takes to shine after logging a spiffy scratch 653 series in the Colts & Fillies. Mick was only a mark away from making the team of the week as he ended up 106 pins over his average for the outing and he was the straw that stirred the drink on his team as they swept their opponents, four games to none.
Finally, we can’t overlook Dee Hert, who really put a hurt on the pins in the Thursday afternoon Lads & Lassies League. Dee racked up a beautiful scratch 210 game and finished her session 110 pins over her average, just a half a mark away from making the team of the week! Dee also powered her team to a 4-0 sweep of their opponents. Great bowling everybody!
