Senior water polo player Forrest Hedberg scored a team-high six goals against Hillsboro on Oct. 22.
HOOD RIVER — On a chilly October night, with a layer of steam rising from the top of the pool, the Hood River Valley water polo teams played their final home games of the season against 5A rival Hillsboro, in front of a large and supportive crowd.
Before varsity took to the pool the teams celebrated their large group of seniors, most of whom have been playing together for many years. While coaches noted highlights of each senior’s water polo career and plans for the future, players received crowns, flowers, cupcakes and support from family. Girls coach Kellie Dunn said “Senior night is always bittersweet. This group of seniors has been through a lot with us and given so much of themselves to the program. We will feel the hole they leave behind, but we are excited to see where they go next.”
Varsity play began with the boys’ team scoring quickly and easily, led by the trio of seniors Rohan Faber, Forrest Hedberg and Caiden Titus. Strong play by goalkeeper Jaden Johnson kept most opposing goals out of the net and the team won by a score of 18-2.
Seniors Sophie Cross and Tess Marsden scored three goals each to lead the girls’ varsity team to a 12-2 win. Senior goalkeeper Kikyo Hawkins looked solid in goal in her final home game. Coach Kellie says that the team’s goal is now the state tournament. “We are at the point where literally everything we do is now focused on State. We’ve been building all season with one ultimate goal in mind. The team is focused, well-trained, and ready. We are excited to show what we’re made of in Bend.”
Teams will play one final away game against 6A team Grant at Mount Hood Community College on Oct 29 before heading to the state playoffs, which will be held in Bend on Nov. 8-9.
