After having not much time on the courts in preparation for the 2016 season, the HRV girls tennis team enjoyed ideal conditions Tuesday afternoon for its home-court debut against their neighbors to the north, the Columbia Bruins.
Even better than the weather conditions was the Eagles’ play, who defeated the Bruins, 5-3, and won the majority of their matches by large margins.
In the No. 1 singles position, Olivia Newcomb won both her sets 6-1. At No. 4, Vaness Olivas took her first set, 6-2, and then shut out her opponent 6-0 in the final frame. Nikki Pauluzz lost 2-6, 0-6 in the No. 2 spot and Kirby Joseph couldn’t quite pull out a win in her first set of the No. 3 match, losing 5-6 in the first and 0-6 in the second.
In doubles, HRV nearly completed a sweep, with the lone exception being Tia Semmes and Camryn Chambers, who dropped a tough three-set match in the No. 1 spot. After losing the first 3-6, Semmes and Chambers battled to win the second set 6-3, but lost 4-10 in the tiebreaker. At the No. 2 position, the Flores twins (America and Crystal) took their match 6-4, 6-1. The Eagles finished strong in the No. 3 and No. 4 matches with the duos of Bianca Badillo/Maddie Back and Adriana Vaca/Kayla Green, respectively, holding their opponents scoreless.
HRV’s matches (both boys and girls) on Friday were cancelled and the Eagles are scheduled to host the Ridgeview Ravens this Saturday at noon. The girls will then travel to Portland to play the Benson Polytechnic Techsters on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
