HOOD RIVER — Silverton ended Hood River Valley’s girls soccer team’s season in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs Nov. 4, when the host Silver Foxes beat the Eagles, 7-1.
Silverton (13-1-2) scored three goals in a 12-minute span and added another 25 seconds before halftime to take a 4-0 lead. Hood River Valley (10-5-1) trailed 7-0 before Josie Faaborg broke the shutout for the Eagles.
The play started when senior defender Jennica Rigert took control of the ball 70 yards away and made a run down the left sideline. She was contested by two Silverton defenders about 30 yards from the goal and then pushed the ball between them to Yareli Hernandez. The senior forward took two touches to avoid a defender then tapped a beautiful lead pass for Faaborg, who had cut behind her defender. Faaborg’s momentum cleared her from the Silverton defense, and she struck a curving, left-footed liner past the Silverton keeper.
The Eagles, led by Coach Kevin Haspela and his assistants Vanessa Silva and Dameon Solorzano, finished the season with a 6-2 Northwest Oregon Conference record and the league’s No. 3 seed in the playoffs. Hood River finished in a three-way tie for second with La Salle Prep and Putnam — behind NWOC champion Wilsonville. It was HRV’s highest finish in the conference girls soccer standings in the four years it has been part of the NWOC.
Hood River Valley posted more league wins this fall than any time since the 2019 conference season, when the Eagles went 9-1 in the Intermountain Conference. HRV was 2-5-1 in its first year in the NWOC in 2022, was 1-7 in 2023, and 2-4-1 in 2024.
Silverton (12-1-2), co-champions of the Mid-Willamette Conference, advanced to the quarterfinals where it lost 3-1 at No. 4 seed Summit of Bend.
