THE GORGE - The Dufur High Rangers, led by senior Tygh Timinsky, shot a season best score of 380 to win the six-team Buffalo Peak Invitational golf tournament April 30 in Madras.
Timinsky shot 75 to notch her eighth individual tourney win, this time out of a 45-player field. The Trinity Lutheran Saints of Bend took second place at 393.
The Rangers, guided by first-year Coach Bill Timinsky (Tygh’s father), also had solid scores from their other senior trio of players. Kaylee Wiles (101), Cynthia Medina (101) and Makaila Collins also helped contribute to the Rangers win. Junior Piper Murders shot a non-counting score of 109 for Dufur.
“Tygh is having a phenomenal year for sure and she’s really playing very well,” said Coach Timinsky.
The Rangers will compete on May 6 in a nine-hole tourney at Wildhorse Resort Golf Course in Pendleton. They play in the OSAA Class 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 6 tournament May 11-12 in Madras.
“I think we’ll have a good chance to win the district tournament,” said Coach Timinsky. “There’s going to be lots of good competition there and I think there’s four or five teams that have a good shot to win it. La Grande, Pendleton, Heppner and Trinity Lutheran all have pretty good teams, as well. But if our girls play well for two days, we’ll have a good shot at getting first or second place and that’s our goal. I also hope that Tygh will win the tournament, too. We’ll have a good practice this week, and then we’ll give it our best shot at districts.”
The top two teams from the district tourney will qualify for the OSAA state tournament May 18-19 at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Redmond. The top five individual players will also qualify for the state tourney.
The Dalles
The Dalles High Riverhawks won an OSAA Class 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 2 girls golf tournament April 28 at The Dalles Country Club. The Riverhawks shot 399.
Senior Elliot Winwood and sophomore Hailey Cain each shot 96; Rozlyn Elliot (101) and Athena Lepinski (106) completed the top four; and Riley Elliot (109) shot a non-counting score of 109 for The Dalles.
The Riverhawks will play in their next event May 11-12 at the district tournament at Arrowhead Golf Course in Molalla.
The Dalles High boys squad competed in a Class 4A 15-team tournament on April 27 at Seaside and they took ninth place with a team score of 360. The Camas High Papermakers took first place at 304.
The Riverhawks, guided by first-year Coach Josh Waller, were led by senior Andrew Westin’s season best score of 77. The Dalles trio of sophomore Caden Rippy (91), freshman Adrian Schultz (92) and sophomore Nautis Kerr rounded out their top-four scoring players. Freshman Jaxson Howe shot a non-counting score of 112 for The Dalles.
“The boys did surprisingly well at Seaside on a course that they’re really not too familiar with,” said Waller. “Andrew played a great round of golf, but our team score was a little higher than what we expected. Andrew is currently ranked third in the state, and he’ll have an excellent chance to qualify for state for the first time ever.”
The Riverhawks will compete in the Tri-Valley Conference District Tournament May 11-12 at Arrowhead Golf Course in Molalla. The top two teams will qualify for the state tourney May 18-19 at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell. The top five individual players will also qualify for state.
Hood River Valley
The Hood River Valley High Eagles boys and girls golf teams both competed in an OSAA Class 5A Northwest Oregon Conference event last week. The Eagle boys squad recorded a season-best team score of 335 to take fifth place in a seven-team event April 27 at Heron Lakes Golf Course in Portland. Canby won the tournament with a score of 320.
Sophomore Aksel Betz led the Eagles with a score of 78 to take sixth place individually out of a 33-player field. The Eagle trio of sophomores Wyatt Bahn (82), Ren Sandahl (88) and junior Max Kellner (87) rounded out the top four scorers. HRV senior Josh McLaughlin shot a non-counting score of 92.
HRV Coach Erin Mason said: “We played our best round of golf this year at Portland, but every team played great there, too. It wasn’t a great score for us, but it was okay. They’re capable of shooting a lower score than that though.”
HRV, led by Betz, finished fourth in the NWOC standings. “Aksel has been playing outstanding all year and he’s currently ranked No. 2 in the state individually. Aksel will probably be the only player on our team to qualify for state.”
The Eagle girls golf team competed in a six-team NWOC event April 27 at Heron Lakes, placing fourth at 457. Senior Bella Howe led the Eagle quartet with a score of 105. Howe was followed on the leaderboard by teammates Kailee Klindt (108), Junior Rayla Yasui (114) and junior Keira Brennan (130). Freshman Sadee Mason shot a non-counting score of 140 for HRV.
The Eagle boys and girls teams will compete in the OSAA SD1 regional tournament May 11-12 at Meadow Lakes Golf Club in Prineville. The top two teams and the top five individual players will advance to the Class 5A state tournaments. The girls state tourney is May 18-19 at OGA Golf Course in Woodburn.
