Senior Kristin Lago and freshman Lydia McElderry led the Hood River Valley High School varsity girls lacrosse team to victory Tuesday with five goals each at Central Catholic. The 17-9 win came with help from seniors Kaili Duffy and Kayla Van Hoose, who had three and two goals each and, along with senior Hannah Hurley, provided key leadership in the team’s third win of the season.
“It was exciting to get such a strong win,” coach Erin Curry commented. “Our team is incredibly deep with talent this year and I am looking forward to a successful season.”
Curry noted a strong defensive effort that contributed to the win, particularly from freshman Savanna Boersma, who broke up several Central Catholic plays and caused turnovers rather than allowing scoring opportunities.
The girls had a day of practice to go over weak points in the game before moving on Thursday to a road game against the undefeated Wilson Trojans.
“Coming into Thursday’s game, we knew we were going to have to fight for the win, but I don't think we really knew how much work it was going to take,” Curry said. “Wilson stepped on to the field as a fine-tuned powerhouse team and we quickly realized we weren't ready.”
Wilson dominated from the first whistle and racked up a 10-0 score by halftime. With a difficult road ahead, the Eagles regrouped at halftime and came out ready to fight back in the second half. Lago led the charge with two goals while Erin Mayer, McElderry, Van Hoose and Hannah Hurley all had one goal apiece in the eventual 13-6 loss.
“Kristin really lead the charge in the transitions, while Delia Dolan, Erin Mayer and Lydia McElderry were really strong on attack,” Curry noted. “Kayla Van Hoose was vital all over the field and once again we were thankful to have Savanna Boersma on defense.”
The team, now 3-4 in the season, returns home for three games next week: Grant on Monday, Wilson on Wednesday and Oregon Episcopal on Friday. All games are at 6:30 p.m. at HRVHS.
