WHITE SALMON — Columbia High sophomore Samantha Evans and senior Saylor Hauge each placed second in their specialties at the 2025 WIAA Class 1A state track and field meet May 29-31 in Yakima.
They also re-set their own school records in the process, leading the Bruins to 11th place with 18 points.
Evans cleared a lifetime best of 5 feet, 5 inches in the high jump, finishing an inch behind the PR of winner Kamdin Carlton of Omak in the meet held at Eisenhower High School. Hauge raced to a lifetime best of 46.34 seconds in the prelims of the 300-meter hurdles — the third-fastest qualifying time. She then improved to second in the finals with her 46.52 effort. Hauge also was seventh in the high jump at 5-0.
The Bruins’ 4x100 relay team of Sequoia Cohen, Hauge, Willow Cohen and Sara Miller ran the 11th fastest time in the state prelims of 51.15 seconds. Junior Hailey Tolbert finished 14th in the prelims of the 100 hurdles in a season best 17.34.
Distance runners Lilah Zimmerman and Helen Hoskins each finished 16th in their races; Zimmerman in a season best 5:36.0 1600, and Hoskins in 12:46.85 in the 3200.
Miller, a senior, ran the sprints with her best finish of ninth in the prelims of the 200 (26.47). She was 12th in the 100 prelims (12.77) and 15th in the 400 (1:02.48).
Coach Jim Anderson’s Bruins were second at the 2025 District 4 track and field finals May 22 at Seton Catholic High School in Vancouver.
Columbia had two athletes in the boys 1A state meet. Freshman Jaime Perez placed 10th in the high jump at 5-10, which matched his lifetime best. Senior Gavin Clifford finished second in the ambulatory 200 meters (PR 31.82), and he was third in the 100 (15.87).
