HOOD RIVER — Seniors Syl Perrin and Brayden Strong paced the Hood River Valley (HRV) cross country team at its 2025 season opening meet Aug. 29 at Wilsonville High School.
Perrin led the Eagle girls, finishing eighth in the senior 3,000-meter race in 10 minutes, 47 seconds. The Night Meet drew 60 teams, whose runners competed by grade. Strong was 48th in the senior boys' race in 9:42.43.
The other boys runners who completed the Eagles’ top eight were: senior Sam Knoll, in 9:47.08; senior Victor Coffman, 9:57.7; sophomore Copeland Louis, 10:01; sophomore Andres Moretti, 10:20; sophomore Joshua Carley, 10:21; and senior Colin Gerald and sophomore Ethan Clough, each timed in 10:57.
Hood River’s girls finishers — top seven — included sophomore Freya Nelson, 13:11; junior Noah Crain, 13:29; senior Piper Johnson and junior Isabel Ulland, each in 13:49; sophomore Sophia Ransom, 14:06; and freshman Wren Eaton, 14:56.
Hood River will get a taste of Northwest Oregon Conference competition Sept. 3, when the nine league teams will compete at the NWOC Preview at Blue Lake Regional Park. Racing begins at 4:30 p.m.
Based on returning runners, there likely will be multiple teams — HRV among them — vying for the 2025 boys NWOC team championship. Although the Eagles lost their top two runners from a season ago — Logan King and Kai Wagner — four varsity runners with district meet experience return.
Knoll missed most of last season because of an injury, but returned prior to the district meet, where he finished 12th (No. 3 for the second-place Eagles). Other returners who ran at district for HRV were Coffman (15th); Gerald (30th); and Louis (32nd). Strong won the NWOC junior varsity race in 2024.
The HRV girls return their top four runners — and five of their top six — from their 2024 fourth-place district meet team. Perrin was seventh overall and she was joined on last fall’s district meet squad by Ulland (15th at district), Crain (17th), senior Charlotte Fuller (18th), and Nelson (27th). Perrin was seventh at district in 2024 and is among the top two returning runners this season, along with Canby’s Macallan Cutsforth (fourth).
HRV’s girls team had its state meet qualifying streak broken last season. The Eagles had qualified for state every season since 2011, a 12-year consecutive streak (the meet was not held in 2020 because of COVID-19).
