HOOD RIVER — The chess matches are over for the Northwest Oregon Conference cross country teams, as they make final preparations for the 2024 district meet.
There have been a handful of contested races between the league’s nine schools this season, but only a few of those were arguably head-to-head matchups. In some, for example, teams were training through mid-week conference races in preparation for larger weekend invitational meets.
That will change Oct. 30 at the district championship meet at Blue Lake Park in East Portland. The top two teams automatically qualify for the Nov. 9 OSAA state championship meet at Lane Community College in Eugene. There will be five other wild card berths afforded to Class 5A teams statewide, as well.
The HRV boys and girls teams figure to contend for the league titles – along with Wilsonville in the boys and girls races, and Putnam and Canby in the girls competition. The HRV boys won the 2023 NWOC district meet with 47 points, while the Eagle girls team was third (and qualified for state as a wild card team).
Junior Syl Perrin finished third in the girls Northwest Oregon Conference district meet a year ago, as four points separated the top three teams. Hood River was third at district with 59 points, and the Eagles qualified for the OSAA state meet for the 12th successive season. Wilsonville won the 2023 district girls title with 55 points and La Salle Prep was second with 56.
HRV senior Logan King, runner-up in 2023, should be in the mix for the boys individual crown. Wilsonville’s Liam Wilde, first in 2023, has the fastest time among NWOC boys runners this season of 15 minutes, 15 seconds. That was over the quick Rose City Golf Course’s 5,000-meter layout. King ran 15:28 that same day, but in a different race. Also in the mix at district should be Canby’s Andrew Dewar, who has won two races this fall.
Eagle boys win Happy Hustle meet
Hood River Valley’s final tune-up before the 2024 Northwest Oregon Conference district championship race came Oct. 23 in Corvallis, where the Eagle boys won The Happy Hustle invite.
HRV scored 80 team points to win the 15-team boys varsity 5,000-meter race over Silverton (88) and Crescent Valley (89). Eagle senior Logan King led the way by finishing second in a photo finish to Zander Campbell of South Albany. Campbell won in 15 minutes, 23.34 seconds, while King was clocked in 15:23.84.
King re-set his Hood River school record, eclipsing the 5,000 time of 15:28 he ran Oct. 11 at the Rose City invitational in Portland.
Hood River’s Kai Wagner was 11th (16:42); Victor Coffman 20th (17:08); Copeland Louis 23rd (17:14); and Andres Moretti 29th (17:32) to complete the Eagle team score.
The HRV girls were fifth among 15 scoring teams and led by junior Syl Perrin, who was competing for the first time in nearly a month and finished seventh overall in 19:25. Hood River’s second through fourth runners – Isabel Ulland, Isabella Perez and Noah Crain – finish in a 13-second pack in 29th, 33rd, and 34th. Freya Nelson was 46th to complete HRV’s team score. Ulland and Perez ran personal bests – 21:43 and 21:54.
Hood River competes Oct. 30 at the nine-team NWOC district meet at Blue Lake Regional Park in East Portland.
