The Dalles High School senior twins Kaleyah and Keiliani Crichton-Tunai fulfilled one of their lifelong goals by signing letters of intent on Jan. 11 to attend Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham and continue their athletic careers playing for the Saints women’s softball team in 2024-25.
Kaleyah and Keiliani were accompanied at the signing ceremony in The Dalles High School lobby by parents Lamont and Amy, Riverhawk softball coach Lindy Macnab, and Athletic Director Billy Brost.
Macnab, who in her first season as coach, helped lead The Dalles to the Tri-Valley Conference title with a 15-0 record and a 26-3 overall record, said: “I’m extremely proud of Kaleyah and Keiliani, and I like to refer to them as double trouble, which is what they’ll be for our opponents this year.”
The twins each had stellar performances on the softball field last year, as they helped lead The Dalles to the 2023 OSAA Class 4A state championship. Kaleyah, a left fielder, had five home runs, 33 RBI, and a .411 batting average.
“We’re hoping to repeat as state champions again this year,” said Kaleyah. “I’m very excited about having the opportunity to go to Mt. Hood, but I also feel a little nervous, too. My goal is to transfer to another college after two years there and I think I’ll have a good chance to do that. I’m hoping that I can go to either the University of Oregon or the University of Oklahoma — those are my top two choices.”
Keiliani, a third baseman, had seven home runs, with 28 RBI and a .486 batting average. The Riverhawks will begin defending their 2023 title when their 2024 season begins March 20.
“I think we’ll have a good chance to repeat, but we did lose a big part of our team in the seniors who graduated, but I think we’ll have a very strong hitting offensive team,” Kaleiani said. “I’m super excited to be going to Mt. Hood; it was one of my biggest goals and I’m glad that I could achieve that.”
Macnab said: “Any college is lucky to have not just one of them but both of them. Mt. Hood has a very good thing coming to them. They both are truly great people; they’re great student athletes and they work really, really hard and it shows in their performance on the field.”
The Crichton-Tunai twins will join a Mt. Hood program guided by Coach Brittany Hendrickson. The Saints are the five-time Northwest Athletic Conference softball champion. The twins may be teammates with another player from the Gorge, as Maggie Bryan of White Salmon is a freshman on the Saints’ 29-player roster. Bryan is a 2023 Columbia High School graduate.
