The defending OSAA Class 4A state softball champion The Dalles High Riverhawks won their season opener 8-2 over the Scappoose High Indians March 14 at Scappoose High School.
The contest was a rematch of a May 30, 2023 state playoff semifinal game that the Riverhawks won 3-1 at home over the Indians.
The Riverhawks, guided by second-year Coach Lindy Macnab, led 3-2 after two innings. Following four scoreless frames, the Riverhawks then took control of the contest with a five-run seventh inning. Keiliani Crichton-Tunia (1-for-4, two RBI), Jeilane Stewart (1-for-4, two RBI), and Maddie Brock (1-for-4, two RBI) each hit home runs for the Riverhawks. The Dalles pitcher Despina Seufalemua allowed one earned run.
“We really came alive in the seventh inning and that’s when we really came through and started cracking the bats and scoring some runs," Macnab said.
“I was really proud of the girls for setting the tone in the first game of the season.”
The Riverhawks play their next contest Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. against the Class 3A Yamhill-Carlton High Tigers at 16th Street Ballpark in The Dalles.
