The Columbia High Bruins have struggled recently, as their losing streak has reached five in WIAA Class 1A boys basketball.
The Bruins (1-5 league, 4-13 overall) lost a Jan. 23, Trico League game 59-49 at Castle Rock (1-8 league, 3-15 overall). The Bruins welcomed one of their best players back onto the court, as sophomore post Mason Hamilton returned after missing seven weeks with a leg injury. Hamilton scored eight points and was one of six players in the scoring column.
Sophomore Hunter Wang scored a career-high 30 points to lead the Bruin offense.
Columbia followed with a Jan. 25, 76-49 road loss in a Columbia Gorge rivalry matchup versus the Stevenson High Bulldogs (6-1 league, 12-3 overall) at Stevenson High School. The Bruins were led by the team-high 19 points from Hamilton.
The Bruins, guided by first-year Coach Brady Trullinger, then played one of their best games of the season in a Jan. 27 home contest versus the league leading Seton Catholic High Cougars (7-0 league, 11-5 overall). Despite losing 68-61, the Bruins had a strong performance against one of the best teams in the state.
“It’s been a difficult season, and so we still have a lot of work to do,” Trullinger said. “We played a great game against Seton, and we only lost by seven to the best team in our league. We’re improving slowly, but surely.
“It’s good to have Mason back now and we’re working him back into our offensive scheme and we’re just trying to improve our team chemistry with him playing again. He missed lots of practices and lots of games, but he’s doing a great job for us now and he’s good team leader vocally as well as with his actions on the court.”
Hamilton led the Bruins in scoring with 19 points, followed by double-figure scorers Hunter Wang (11) and Flores (11).
“If we play like we did against Seton in every game, then we’ll have a good chance in all of our remaining games.”
