The Columbia High Bruins notched their second straight win in WIAA Class 1A Trico League girls soccer, providing them with momentum for the upcoming district playoffs beginning Oct. 28.
The Bruins (3-3 league, 5-4 overall) won, 5-1, on Oct. 10 over the Stevenson High Bulldogs (1-6 league, 3-9 overall) in a Gorge Rivalry contest at Stevenson High School.
Junior forward Saylor Hauge (two goals), sophomore Sage Witherrite (two goals) and sophomore Aydeah Wiedle (goal) helped lead the Bruins’ offense. Witherrite, Hauge, senior Sarah VonRueden and junior Sequoia Cohen each contributed assists.
The Bruins, guided by interim Coach Parker Walker, followed with a 5-4 win over the King’s Way Christian High Knights (4-3 league, 6-4 overall) on Oct. 12 at Columbia High. The Bruins took a 3-1 halftime advantage and then held off a Knights’ second-half comeback. Kiki Barkhimer, Wiedle, and Cohen (two) each scored goals; Hauge and Kiera Bucher had assists.
“Scoring 10 goals in two games sure made it pretty fun and the team is playing very well right now,” said Walker. “I think the most fun component is that we’re starting to play a team system. We’re moving the ball around to create scoring opportunities with five to 10 passes instead of one player being involved in a play.”
Columbia was scheduled to play Castle Rock on Oct. 17 and at home Oct. 19 vs. La Center High (6-0 league, 11-1 overall).
“We’re going to have a very challenging game against La Center, which is the top team in our league,” said Walker. “I think we’ll have chance to maybe get an upset win though. I think our match versus King’s Way was the right kind of game to help set us up and so now we’re finally ready for this sort of challenge. The first time we played them (a Sept. 28, 7-1 loss), I think the team system that we were trying to utilize wasn’t fully developed. I think now everyone understands their roles and responsibilities.”
The Bruins are in fourth place in the six-team Trico League, behind King’s Way, Seton Catholic, and La Center.
Columbia head Coach Jimmy Pardo will return to guide the Bruins on Oct. 20 - after his administrative leave of absence is over.
“Even though he wasn’t here for a while, Jimmy set us up with a good coaching team, which includes volunteer assistant Coach Wyatt Cohen, who has been involved with the team all season,” said Walker. “We’ve been able to maintain a good coaching unit in Jimmy’s absence. We also have another volunteer assistant with Coach Alondra Casarez.
“Jimmy knew that having a successful season takes a lot of coaches with availability and skills to help improve the team.”
