WHITE SALMON — Last Saturday in Vancouver, the Columbia High School (CHS)Bruins boys soccer team won a second straight Trico 1A district championship. Although the game was played at King’s Way, the selected neutral site for the championship game, it didn’t feel like an away game for CHS. Despite the Bruins’ opponent (Seton Catholic High School) being just a few minutes drive away, the crowd was mostly Bruin fans.
Seton Catholic (14-2-3) played a tough physical game, throwing numbers at CHS midfielders Matthew Carillo, Matthew Miller (captain) and Ulices Huerta (captain) and preventing the Bruins from their normal possession game. In the first half, Seton Catholic had some of the better looks at goal, but Bruins goalkeeper, Ricardo Cortez, made several key stops, including a fingertip save that ended up careening off the crossbar.
Halfway through the second half, the game turned end-to-end with both teams launching long passes to their forwards. Neither team was able to break the other down and produce a goal. With the clock stopped and in stoppage time, Huerta launched a free kick to the end line where Benson Zendt was able to get to the ball and center it to forward Isaac Reynoso who headed it past Seton Catholic goalie, Zach Catherall, and give CHS a 1-0 lead. CHS defenders Juan Santoyo-Luna, Humberto Pulido, Damian Sanchez and Bridger Gilchrist were able to help Cortez see out the remaining seconds of the game and preserve the 1-0 district championship win.
Columbia boys soccer (17-0-3) remain undefeated heading into the WIAA 1A state tournament as the No. 3 seed in the state. They will play either this Thursday or Friday at home in Bruin Stadium. If they win, they will play a second game at home over the weekend.
