The WIAA Class 1A Columbia High Bruins started their non-league baseball schedule last week by winning one out of three games.
Following a season-opening 17-12 loss to the Class 2A Hudson’s Bay High Eagles March 12 in Vancouver, the Bruins (1-2) played their home opener one day later in a doubleheader versus the Corbett High Cardinals (1-1).
The Cardinals, an OSAA Class 3A squad, had everything going their way in Game 1, which they won 10-0. Senior pitcher Mac Garrett (15 strikeouts) helped lead Corbett to the shutout win.
The resilient Bruins, guided by first-year Coach William Gross, responded with a 5-3 game 2 victory to get the split March 13 in White Salmon.
“One thing that we’ve talked about is learning how to bounce back from adversity and we obviously did a really good job of that,” Gross said. “After the lopsided defeat in the first game and seeing us come back to play like we did in the second game, I was just incredibly proud of everyone.”
The Bruins built a 1-0, second-game lead in the first inning when junior Ben Borton (1-for-3, single) scored a run. Columbia junior starting pitcher Jaden Wang held Corbett in check early.
After scoreless second and third innings, the Bruins extended their lead in the fourth. Juniors Seth White (three walks, two runs scored) and Wyatt Stelma (1-for-1, walk, two runs) both reached base on walks. White then scored on an RBI single by freshman relief pitcher Kellen Olson (1-for-3). Stelma scored on an RBI single by Borton, lifting the Bruins in front 3-0 after four innings.
“It felt great to get a win and we have a great coach, who was leading us through the game all the way,” Olson said. “There’s going to be many more wins for our team this year, too. We just had a different mentality in the second game.”
The Bruins extended their lead with a two-run, two-out rally in the fifth inning. White drew a walk and scored on an RBI-single by Olson. Stelma hit a single and later scored when Bryce Wang reached first base on an error, making it 5-1.
“It was a great win for the team because we came back after a tough loss in the first game,” Stelma said. “We stepped up and played better defense in the second game.”
Junior center fielder Bryce Wang, who made the game’s final out, said: “Wyatt did an amazing job of pitching on the mound at the end. It was so fun in the seventh inning with Wyatt pitching so well and it was probably the most exciting way for us to pull out a win. I have so much faith in our team now, especially seeing how much more we’ve improved from last year.”
Corbett outhit the Bruins, 8-4. The Bruins had a total of six stolen bases.
