WHITE SALMON – Columbia High School’s track and field team competed April 29 at a midweek shakeout meet at Stevenson High School – in preparation for a weekend invitational in Washougal (see related story).
The Bruins joined Trico League teams Castle Rock, La Center and Stevenson, along with nearby Trout Lake, for the late April meet. A highlight for Columbia was the senior sweep of the four hurdle events. Senior Hailey Tolbert won the girls 100 highs in 17.88 seconds, and senior teammate Mariela Casarez won the 300 lows in 51.29. Senior Aidan Hainline won the boys 110s in 18.51, and senior Hunter Wang led a 1-3-5 Bruin finish in the 300 intermediates.
Sophomore Simon Caldwell was a double winner for Columbia, leaping a personal best 19 feet, 6 inches in the long jump and clearing 5-8 in the high jump. Colby Clark paced a 1-3-5 finish in the boys 3200, winning in a personal best 10:49.51 – the third-fastest time in CHS history for that event.
On the girls side, Sara Miller won the 200 in 26.48 and Maya Tama ran a personal best in the 800 (2:35.73). The Columbia girls finished second in the 4x400 relay, as Casarez, Olivia Allen, Lilah Zimmerman, and Miller clocked 4:23.6.
The Trout Lake girls showed why they’re considered one of the top teams in OSAA Class 1A by winning the meet’s final event, the 4x400 relay. The Mustangs won four individual events and finished second in five events – including the short relay.
That team included Lisa Medina, Lupe Medina, Jade Mclean, and Cora Sharp running 52.34. Riley Rickman, Melody Stock, Mclean, and Sharp won the long relay in a season best 4:16.6, the No. 2 time in OSAA 1A thus far.
Stock also won the 1600 (5:10.33); Mclean and Rickman went 1-3 in the pole vault; Aurora Zoller and Eden Anderson went 1-2 in the shot put and discus; Lupe Medina was second in the 300 hurdles; and Sharp was second in the 100 and long jump.
Trout Lake also sent some athletes to the Redside Invitational May 2 in Maupin (see related story). Zoller threw a personal best 88-1 in the discus; McLean and Rickman finished 1-2 in the pole vault; and Medina ran a personal best in the low hurdles of 50.56 seconds.
