The defending WIAA Class 1A Trico League softball champion Columbia High Bruins (6-0 league, 8-3) remained undefeated in the six-team league standings after sweeping a three-game series last week against the Castle Rock High Rockets (3-3 league, 5-6 overall).
The Bruins swept a doubleheader, 5-3 and 11-4, over the Rockets on April 16, followed by a 9-4 win April 19 at Castle Rock High School.
In last Friday’s road game, the Bruins took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a two RBI double by freshman Joella Posini (3-for-4, three RBI). The Bruins led 3-2 after the fourth inning, when junior Grace Kennedy (1-for-2) hit an RBI single.
The Bruins, guided by second-year Coach Jesse Bryan, took control of the game by scoring two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth, extending their lead to 9-2.
“Lola Marti started for us in the game at Castle Rock and she did really well,” Bryan said. “We have a very good trio of pitchers that also includes Josie Dickey [2023 Trico first team all-league pitcher].
“Grace had a big hit that really changed the momentum for us … We’re getting other players helping contribute a lot more offensively who were not involved as much in previous games. The team is really coming together and they’re gaining more confidence even though we’re really young [seven freshmen, no seniors] and they’re fun to watch.”
The Bruins utilized their highly prolific offense (7.36 runs per game average) while outhitting the Rockets 13-9. Julia Mullinix (3-for-5, two runs scored), Fiona Grabb (2-for-5, RBI), Kiera Bucher (1-for-3, two RBI), Halle Kock (2-for-4, three runs), and freshman Danica Herman (1-for-3, run) also helped contribute to the Bruins’ offense.
The Bruins duo of relief pitcher Herman and Marti combined for six strikeouts and three walks to help lead the Bruins defense.
“We played really good defense and we had lots of opportunities to make plays against a Castle Rock team that hits pretty well,” said Bryan. “It’s fun to see how the team is unfolding; they understand things and they’re feeling confident that they can win a lot more games … We’re hoping to win another championship and defend our league title this year.”
After winning their first Trico title in school history in 2023, the Bruins are seeking to reach the state playoffs for a second straight year and record a third straight 20-win season.
