WHITE SALMON — Columbia High School won two of three boys soccer matches this past week and regained the lead in the Trico League with three regular-season matches remaining.
The Bruins (11-2-1 overall, 11-2-0 in league) started the week with a 6-0 win at home over Onalaska on April 20, lost two days later at Fort Vancouver (3-2 score), then won, 2-1, on April 24 at Seton Catholic.
Columbia overpowered Onalaska to start the week at home. The Bruins took a 2-0 halftime lead behind goals from senior defender Humberto Pulido Jr. and senior forward Matt Miller (one of two for him). Pulido’s score came on a long through-ball, which bounced over the oncoming Onalaska goalie and dribbled into the net.
Miller was in the right place at the right time for his goal. He cleaned up Manuel Barajas Victorio’s shot, which the Onalaska keeper got a glove on, but the ball deflected into the air and behind him - where Miller one-touched the ball into the net. Josh Fortanel Gallardo and Isaac Reynoso added early, second-half goals for Columbia.
Against Fort Vancouver, Reynoso scored 2 goals on 2 assists from Matthew Carrillo. Ricardo Cortez also had an effective day as a goalkeeper with 3 saves.
In the Seton Catholic game, Columbia’s first score came on an own goal. The second goal came from senior Anderson Hernandez, assisted by Reynoso. Cortez had another good outing with 2 more saves on the day.
Columbia has 33 points in league play, La Center is second with 32, and Fort has 30.
CHS has remaining matches against host La Center on April 29, at King’s Way on May 5, and at home against Winlock on May 6. La Center dealt Columbia its other loss this season, 1-0, on March 21.
