EUGENE — As a former Washingtonian and a Washington State University alumnus, I’m very familiar with the dominance of Oregon Ducks football over the years and the spectacle that is Autzen Stadium. I saw the Ducks play a handful of times during my childhood and college days in Eastern Washington; however, I was never able to make the trip to Eugene. That all changed last Saturday, as I was able to see Oregon beat USC, 42-27, on Nov. 22 in Autzen Stadium.
From the pre-game tailgates to the famous Isley Brothers “Shout” chant after the third quarter, the environment in Eugene was electric. Needless to say, I was incredibly impressed with Eugene and the game day experience.
The stadium was loud (and full) all game long, and it felt like the crowd got louder as the game progressed.
The fans themselves seemed incredibly polite, while also maintaining a healthy dose of rowdiness, living up to the hype of the classic college film, “National Lampoon’s Animal House.”
As a first timer to Eugene and Autzen Stadium, I would highly recommend the trip to any Oregonian, or any fan of college football and the game day experience.
As for Oregon’s performance on the field, the Ducks looked very strong against a solid USC team, despite the penalties. The Ducks had 11 of them, for 130 yards on the day.
Oregon is right in the thick of the College Football Playoff race, and the win against the Trojans only adds to its resume before traveling to Seattle to battle the Washington Huskies on Nov. 29 in a Pacific Northwest rivalry.
The Ducks are ranked fifth in the latest Associated Press poll, as of Nov. 23, and will wait for the next installment of the College Football Playoff rankings on Nov. 25.
I won’t be trading in my crimson and gray anytime soon, but even I have to admit, if you’re checking stadiums off your college football bucket list, Autzen deserves a spot near the top.
