The City of The Dalles Wastewater Treatment Plant has discharged effluent that exceeds the plant’s limit for E. coli due to incomplete disinfection, according to a press release from the city. Sample test results read on the morning of July 12 indicated an E. coli exceedance. Several resamples in the following 24 hour period confirmed that the treatment process is not under control. The cause of the exceedance is an upset in biological processes. Rigorous water quality monitoring is ongoing.

The Dalles City Council rolled back a planned sewer rate increase of 3.44 percent Monday after staffers reported that budget was looking good for continued improvements to the wastewater treatment plant. “Wastewater revenues for the current year are projected to hit right on budget,” wrote Dave Anderson, public works director, in his briefing.

The Dalles will soon have the first wastewater treatment plant in the Northwest overhauled by using design-build methods that are geared toward making new construction go more smoothly. The $4.8 million project to update capacity and replace aging equipment is going through the design phase with Mortenson Construction and Kennedy/Jenks Consultants, an engineering firm, working closely together on plans.
