THE DALLES — The Annex Transitional Housing and Shelter is receiving an eye-catching new feature in the form of a mural on the west side of the building. Created by The Dalles artists Chris Pothier and Dylan McManus, the mural features a colorful combination of shapes that together create the image of an outstretched arm with a child its palm.

WHITE SALMON — The Underwood Conservation District (UCD), along with community partners, has completed a mural with the goal of “[enhancing] public appreciation and understanding of natural resources in the Columbia River Gorge,” said Tova Tillinghast, UCD district director.

Starting Wednesday, Aug. 24, painters from all over the nation are expected to flock to The Dalles to, quite literally, paint the town. These painters, known as Walldogs, are anticipated to paint 15 murals on various buildings around town in a five-day event known as Northwest Muralfest.

Janet Essley is a painter, muralist, and teaching artist with 20 years’ experience creating collaborative murals with youth and adults. She has led collaborative murals for schools, colleges, community service groups, churches, at-risk youth programs, and environmental education projects.
