In past seasons, losing six seniors off a varsity boys soccer team at Columbia High would lead to rebuilding talk for the subsequent season, but Coach Daniel Mangum’s program enjoyed a large turnout of players this spring. That, and the talent level of some of the younger players, bodes well for the Bruins’ future.
Road-weary Columbia High shook off a 2-0 loss April 14 against Seton Catholic to grind out wins in a pair of boys soccer matches this past week.
The Bruins (6-3-1 overall, 5-2 district) topped host Winlock, 3-2, on April 19 and beat visiting La Center 3-2 a day later. The grinding came in part because of the nine-hour round trip to Winlock and then a next-day match against La Center. It also came because of the quality of competition the Bruins had to face in the physical matches.
A 14-0 goal advantage in their past two matches has the Columbia High boys soccer team seemingly ready for the heart of league play this week.
Columbia (3-1-1) beat Stevenson 9-0 March 21 and the Bruins topped Toledo 5-0 on March 25. Columbia is scheduled to continue league play 6 p.m. Thursday at King’s Way.
