The City of The Dalles council and the Wasco County board of commissioners will publicly review a proposed Strategic Investment Program (SIP) agreement with Google for the development of property Google has purchased in The Dalles — primarily consisting of the former aluminum plant site and the rodeo grounds — at two joint public meetings scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Feb. 17 and 5:20 p.m. Feb. 22, according to a Feb. 10 press release from Wasco County.
Gene Parker, longtime city attorney for The Dalles, has announced he will retire in March 2020, giving the city time to find a replacement he can help train.
City of The Dalles Incumbent Russ Brown, a retired contractor, has been challenged for the Position 3 council seat by Tiffany Prince, executive assistant to the president and board of education at Columbia Gorge Community College. Both candidates were presented with six questions and asked to respond in their own words, with a limit of 200 words per question.
The Dalles City Council is seeking to loop outlying communities into an Enterprise Zone that will provide eligible businesses with startup tax breaks to promote economic development. Primarily, the zones exempt growing or new businesses from local property taxes on new investments for a specific period of time.
Fifty-two people gathered for Monday’s town hall meeting to learn how establishing an Enterprise Zone in The Dalles has helped with job creation. “It’s a unique tool in terms of giving direct benefits to businesses,” said Arthur Fish, business incentives coordinator for Business Oregon, which oversees the zones.
To the editor: While I too am happy to see some relief on our water bills and also express gratitude for the donated time from our city council and mayor, I do have concerns about their decisions.
